PROJECT ACTIVITIES in 2007

※Please refer to the page of "EVENT CALENDAR" on the each activities.

Collaborative Research Programs

Effective collaborative research programs are to be achieved by enabling joint use of high-power laser facilities located at Institute of Laser Engineering Osaka University, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in UK, Ecole Polytechnique LULI in France, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and University of Michigan in US. In our project, we aim to explore the following research fields on the basis of exchanges of young researchers and graduate students: a) Relativistic Plasma Physics, b) High Pressure Condensed Matter, c) Warm Dense Matter, d) Laboratory Astro Physics, and e) Plasma Photonics.:

  • Relativistic Plasma Physics ; Japan, US, and UK researchers will team up to conduct experiments at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK), Univ. of Michigan (US), and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (US). Also, in collaboration with the US team (Univ. of Nevada), theoretical researches are to be made.
  • High Pressure Condensed Matter ; Using laser facilities at LUL I(France) and Osaka Univ., we plan to perform joint experiments. Also, the Japan-US-France team will launch a plan for joint experiments at Livermore National Laboratory (US).
  • Warm Dense Matter ; In Univ. of California, Berkeley, joint experiments on physical metallurgy will be carried out, using ion beams. Also, based on theoretical research of excited X-ray, a novel collaborative experiment is to be discussed by Japan, UK, and US researchers.
  • Laboratory Astro Physics ; The Japan-France-UK team will conduct collaborative experiments and theoretical researches relating to jet generation and shock wave by utilizing laser systems at Osaka Univ, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and LULU.
  • Plasma Photonics ; The Japan-France, and Japan-UK research teams will perform joint experiments with laser facilities at LULI, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and Osaka Univ. Also, in collaboration with the US team (Univ. of Nevada), theoretical researches are to be made.

Seminars

Three Japan seminars and one US seminar are planned. The three Japan seminars are to be held around the same time between September and October in 2007 in order to be managed efficiently.

  • JSPS Core-to-Core Program and British Embassy Joint Seminar, “Japan- UK workshop on High Energy Density Science”, Sep. 18-19, British Embassy in Tokyo, Japan
  • JSPS Core-to-Core Program and JAEA Joint Seminar "International symposium on laser-driven relativistic plasmas applied for science, industry and medicine”, Sep. 17-20, Japan Atomic Energy Agency Kansai Photon Research Institute, Kyoto, Japan
  • JSPS Core-to-Core Program and Osaka University Joint Seminar “International Workshop on Interdisciplinary Laboratory Astrophysics”, October, Tokyo University, Japan
  • JSPS Core-to-Core Program Seminar “Science on Warm Dense Matter” , March 3-7, 2008, Berkeley, US

Researcher Exchanges

Young researches and graduate students are encouraged not only to participate in the joint research programs but to make researches in UK Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and US Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, forming a network of the next-generation researchers. They’re also expected to make research presentations at the European Physical Society Conference on Plasma Physics in July and the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics in November. In addition, the Japanese coordinator will visit counterpart and cooperating institutions to discuss strategic international research collaborations with them on such topics as matching funds.
